Broadening Imagination Through Music Video
Most songs have a music video, most of them don’t. A music video itself has many purposes. From showcasing the artists to promoting the song (and the artists too).
The history of music videos first started in the 1920s as a “musical short film.” (Yellow Brick Studio, n.d.). Then in 1966, The Beatles contributed to bringing music videos into the light by showing taped performances on television of their songs, like “Rain” and “Paperback Writer.” (Munsalud, 2018). After that, it was MTV who is credited for popularizing music videos in the 1980s. But in this technology era, MTV is slowly being forgotten. There are many options to watch music videos (and films), and YouTube is being one of them.
A music video can also be used to show the uniqueness of the artists. I’ll take an example from one of the most talked-music videos, Gangnam Style. In December 2012, the music video of Gangnam Style reached 1 billion views. And it was the first music video that had reached 1 billion views on YouTube.
